history
Back in 2001 when there was no organized Drum and Bass concept in Oslo Mada came up with the brilliant idea to start Oxygen. He brought in Teebee and Sketchy (Rawthang) as residents DJs, and booked some of the biggest names in dnb.
The night was off to a flying start, and people and press both seemed to love the vibe that Oxygen offered. The first season of Oxygen won the award for Oslos best clubnight of the year, which was an accomplishment in a city mostly mostly known for its disco and trance nights.
The first venue to ever host the event was a club called Jazid. Jazid was shut down in 2002 when its owners had a choice between going commercial or keeping their musical profile and going under financially —they chose to quit.
A period of restlessness moving followed, as Oxygen struggled to find a new home. Oxygen was held at Head On, then at Barong Sai, until the rumours of Skansen re-opening started circulating. Skansen was once rated as the third best club in the world by The Face, and has a special place in Oslos nightlife.
Oxygen and Skansen quickly came to an agreement, and the first party at Skansen was held. Unfortunately it would be a year until the next one, all because of the bureaucratic process you have to go through to get a liquor-license in Oslo. But in that year Oxygen moved to Sikamikanico, and everything just fell back into place. The crew was greeted by a group of people who wanted to help Oxygen be the best it could, and Oxygen ended up having the best parties since leaving Jazid.
Sikamikaniko has one of the best soundsystems in Oslo, and is also graced by owners who not only are soundfreaks —but also wants their djs to play drum&bass. LOUD!
When Skansen got back in business in February of 2004 the Oxygen collective was ready to move in to its new home. Although Skansen was mainly known for good House music, Oxygen managed throw several packed parties thoughout the year. In November of 2004, Skansen shut their doors due to bad management, so Oxygen was once again homeless.
Thanks to our previous relations with Sikamikanico and their willingness to promote the Drum and Bass genre, we have now moved back in to our old home. Through 2005, Oxygen was at Sikamikaniko on friday nights.
Sikamikanico changed owners in the fall of 2005, and although the new management is not used to how Oxygen works, we seem to get well along. Throughout 2006, Oxygen will be at Sika.
